M16a4

Components

Fire Control Group

Rifles manufactured for export or military sales have the automatic fire control group; the selector switch has options for SAFE, SEMI, and BURST (or AUTO). These weapons are found with the M16 hammer assembly, the M16 disconnector, and a trigger assembly that allows for the auto sear to function as intended in conjunction with the auto selector switch. The M16 lower receiver has a section of its shelf milled lower to accommodate the auto sear, and an additional hole (the sear hole) is drilled into the lower receiver to hold the sear in place.

Bolt

The bolt should be composed of Carpenter 158 (C158) steel for maximum durability, and should be shot peened, tested with a proof load, and MPI tested for cracks and inclusions.

Barrel

In adherence to the TDP (Technical Data Package), the barrel should be hammer forged from 4150 CMV (Chrome-moly Vanadium) steel. This allows the barrel to last a bit longer under the stresses of full auto fire or rapid semi-auto fire, and leaves the barrel less prone to gas port erosion and throat erosion.

The data package calls for a 1:7 twist in the M16s and M4s, which handles the heavier and longer bullets. As with the bolt, the barrel should be tested with a proof load and MPI tested to check for structural deficiencies.

Sights

The iron sights on the M16A1 did not have distance adjustment on the rear sight, only windage. The M16A2 sights have distance settings and windage settings; both are adjustable. The standard distance settings are 300 to 800 meters.

The A2 sights feature a smaller aperture for longer distance shooting, and a larger aperture (labeled as 0-2, for 0-200 meters) for low-light shooting and close-quarters combat. Typically, if the smaller aperture is zeroed for 300 meters, the larger aperture is zeroed for 200 meters.

The standard front sight assembly on all AR-15s is adjustable for elevation.

The standard A2 rifle front sight post is .270 inches tall, and has a square profile. It has four notches around the base of the front sight post, each notch representing 1.25 MOA in elevation.

The standard A1 rifle front sight post is .260 inches tall, and has a tapered round shape. It has five notches around the base of the front sight post, each notch representing 1 MOA of elevation.

The standard A2 carbine front sight post is .270 inches tall, and has a tapered, square profile, to provide a better view of the target. This is due to the fact that the carbine has a shorter sight radius than the rifle; the front sight post appears to cover much more of the target.

Colt makes a front sight post that is .300 inches in height, and Bushmaster makes one that is .310 inches tall, allowing for closer zeroing without the front sight being too far out of the front sight base.

История создания

В 1957 году представители армии США обращаются к известной компании Armalite Division of the Fairchild Aircraft Corp

ArmA: Armed Assault

The M16A4 is a gas-operated weapon. It is chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition. It is the successor of the M16A3, with the only significant difference being that the M16A4 lacks a full-auto firing mode. A number of lightweight materials are used in construction of this weapon in order to save weight.

The M16A4 is used exclusively by the U.S. Army in ArmA: Armed Assault.

Overview

The M16A4 is a gas operated, selective-fire assault rifle that is chambered to fire the 5.56×45 mm NATO round.

It loads from 30-round STANAG magazines shared with the , and is able to attain a fire rate of up to ~ 666 rounds per minute, with a muzzle velocity of 850 m/s. The M16A4 features ironsights as standard but alternately features sub-variants fitted with ACOG riflescope. It cannot be fitted with muzzle attachments.

The standard-issue weapon of U.S. Marines deployed on Sahrani, the M16A4 is a fairly precise assault rifle. It looks very similar to the M16A2, but has several useful features added such as a removable carryhandle and an integrated rail mounting system.

U.S. Marine wielding an uncustomised M16A4 with only its carryhandle for sights.

With an effective firing range of up to roughly 400 metres, the M16A4 serves as a decent general-purpose rifle. When opting for the alternate riflescope-fitted M16A4 ACOG variants, the M16A4 can be accurately used to engage targets at distances of up to 600 metres away instead.

Handling-wise, the M16A4 isn’t that much different to the as both have almost identical recoil. The main advantage (and disadvantage) of the M16A4 is its longer barrel, which provides it slightly increased range over its carbine counterpart but also makes it more cumbersome to wield in close quarters.

Though it can only be toggled to fire in either semi-automatic or 3-round burst modes like the M16A2, simply tapping the trigger as quickly as possible allows the operator to essentially fire on full auto as there is almost an unnoticeable delay between bursts.

The M16A4 GL is a modified variant of the baseline M16A4 rifle that has an underbarrel 40 mm grenade launcher attached to it.

Along with its parent weapon, it is also chambered to fire the same 5.56 mm NATO round but the underbarrel M203 is designed to launch 40 mm grenades instead.

The M203 has a conventional leaf sight that is accurate at distances of up to 300 metres. It is otherwise virtually identical to the standard M16A4 in every other way.

Overview

Once again returning in ArmA 2, the M16A2 is now used by several more factions but functionally remains the same as its predecessors.

It still loads from either 20-round box or 30-round STANAG magazines shared by its modern counterpart, and is able to attain a fire rate of up to 800 RPM on burst. The M16A2 does not come in any variant that has either optical accessories or muzzle attachments fitted to it.

Identical to its predecessor in Armed Assault, the M16A2 is often wielded as an alternate primary weapon alongside the heavier battle rifle carried by most Takistani soldiers.

Takistani Army grenadier. Note the distinctive heat shield unique to the M203-fitted variant.

Compared to its , the M16A2 has better ironsights with a slimmer aiming post which makes it easier to aim at targets at distances of up to 400 metres away. The M16A2’s use of 5.56 mm also allows it to share ammunition with modern assault rifles like the , or even the SCAR family of modular weapons.

Its lack of modularity does mean that isn’t nearly as useful compared to other modern rifles though, as is its inability to fire on full auto. Since it doesn’t feature any variants fitted with suppressors, the M16A2 is also useless for missions that require stealth.

Loaded with subsonic 5.56 mm ammunition. It fires rounds with greatly reduced velocities of 320 m/s, but remain otherwise identical to regular plastic magazines.

MG36 Mag.

100-round Beta-C drum used by the MG36 light support weapon. Aside from its capacity it is completely identical to regular 30-round plastic magazines.

Trivia

  • ArmA 2 is the first game in the series to feature the M16A2 as an OPFOR weapon rather than BLUFOR or a BLUFOR-aligned Independent faction

Some USMC units can still be seen wielding the M16A2 in the early stages of the Operation Harvest Red campaign. However, none of their units actually utilise the M16A2 in regular gameplay.

    .

  • Like the and XM8 assault rifles, the M16A2 was actually available in ArmA 2 first but would remain unused by any in-game faction until the release of Operation Arrowhead.

Variants

M16

The M16

The Colt Model 601, adopted by the United States Air Force in 1959, was the first model M16. Featured a 20-inch barrel with a 1/12 twist and a non-chrome lined stainless steel bore, a fixed polymer stock, a fixed carrying handle, and no forward assist. Early models did not feature a brass deflector. The lower receiver did not feature a rib around the magazine release button. The muzzle for this model was a three-prong open-fronted «duckbill» flash suppressor. The standard M16 fired in full-auto and single shots only.

M16A1

The M16A1

The Colt Model 603, officially adopted by the U.S. Army as the M16A1. Featured a 20-inch barrel with 1/12 twist, and a chrome-lined bore and chamber. Forward assist included with this model, bird cage flash suppressor added and an external rib around the now larger magazine release. Additionally the stock was shortened and the sling swivels were more outwardly angled to allow better dexterity when slung. The fully automatic fire mode was also changed to a burst fire selector to avoid wasting ammunition during suppressive fire. Otherwise identical to M16. It was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1963 and was in use during the Vietnam war throughout the U.S. military, phasing out the M14.

M16A2

The M16A2

The Colt Model 645, adopted by the U.S. military in 1986 as the M16A2. Features the A2-style lower with longer buttstock, the round delta ring, round handguards, the heavy «government profile» 20-inch barrel with 1/7 twist, the A2 pistol grip, a fire control group with SAFE, SEMI, and BURST functions, a longer stock, brass deflector and iron sights, with the rear sight being adjustable for windage and range (up to 800 meters). The front sight, as noted earlier, still adjusts for elevation. The buttplate was made longer from top to bottom and 30 round magazines were standard with the A2, unlike prior models.

M16A3

Receiver closeup of the M16A2E3, which would later be adopted as the M16A3

The Colt Model 646, adopted by the U.S. Navy as the M16A3. This model was essentially an M16A2 converted to fire in full-auto, with no burst-fire provision. Early production models are still marked «M16A2». Later production models, known as the Colt Model 901, featured flat-top receivers.

M16A4

The M16A4

The Colt Model 945, adopted by the U.S. military as the M16A4. Introduced in 1996, it is the same as M16A2, but with a flat-top upper receiver suitable for mounting optics. Features a rifle-length KAC (Knight’s Armament Company) rail (RIS rail) and a slightly taller front sight block (if the gas block isn’t shaved down for optics). This was once the current issue infantry rifle for the United States Marine Corps, however it was more recently phased out of frontline service by the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. Since then, the M16A4 has come to fill the role that the M14 rifle had when the first M16 was introduced, being used as a training rifle for new recruits to the Corps. These are now also produced by FN, alongside the M4A1.

FN15 Military Collector M16

A civilian semi automatic version of the M16A4 with modernized furniture. Other than the lack of select fire, it is identical to FN’s iteration of the M16A4 (Which is most often a more modern looking model with a full rail system on the forward handguard and without a carry handle). This is internally identical to FN’s other Military Collector rifle, the M4, the only differences being it is shorter (like an M4A1 is to an M16A4) and has the telescoping buttstock from its military version, said version being also provided by FN, alongside Colt.

Foreign Variants

M16S1

The M16S1

The M16S1 was a Singapore-produced version of the M16A1, manufactured by Chartered Industries of Singapore. It was the standard Singaporean service rifle from 1973 to 1999. The M16S1 is now used mostly for ceremonial purposes. It is also held as a reserve weapon.

Performance and History

The M16A4 is the current US Marines service rifle. It is manufactured by a contract from FNH, the United States expansion of Fabrique Nationale.

The prototype was named the ArmaLite AR-15, to this day civilian models of both M16 and M4’s are call AR-15 or «The AR-15 weapons platform». Throughout the 21 century the rifle was modular and many modifications and even parts in the civilian market has caught eye of the military. The success of the rifle being more personal and customizable as ever, and classified unofficially as a weapon system,

Colt has licensed only three producers the rights to manufacture the M16. The first was Elisco tools and manufacturing corp of the Philippines and the second is ST kinetics of Singapore the third is The Canadian Government

The Introduction of the Colt M16 was first used by the Air Force servicemen first in 1962. It was not until six years later it was officially tested in Vietnam as a replacement for the US Marines and Army M14 service rifle. At first it was widely accepted by many soldiers as that ability to control the weapon when it were fully automatic. In Vietnam everyone began to have troubles with it in the mud, the water, the fact that the rifle’s chamber naturally got dirtier after it fired round per round even though the servicemen were told it was a «self cleaning rifle». Part of US casualties was from the rifle jamming at untimely events of an ambush or firefight. The M16A1 was a war production improved model. With a bigger cylinder shaped hand guard and less complicated gas block, and a forward assist added to the rifle made the rifle be able to chamber rounds if it did not chamber without sticking fingers inside the small ejection port.

The main problem about the M16 was not the fact it jammed frequently, it was because it is the fastest fully automatic rifle made at 950 Rounds a minute. To correct one mistake from Vietnam was the bullets spent to kill ratio. During Vietnam The M16 would empty a whole 30 round magazine in 5 seconds which was too fast to conserve ammunition, and the fact the soldiers relied on automatic too much and had trouble completing combat patrols without the need for an ammunition drop in otherwise «no fly zones». The M16A2 was the answer to the trigger happy grunt, making three round busts happen with enough stopping power up to ten targets or pulls.

The M16A3 was not really mentioned as the next success. It was the only fully automatic in the 1980’s that was only used by the Navy SEALS. If one were to describe it, it was just a fully automatic A2.

Trivia Edit

Insurgency

  • Prior to the «Insurgency: Nightfall» update, the M16A4 used flip-up iron sights instead of the carry handle.
  • In the Insurgency: Early Access, the M16A4 was actually a M16A3 with an unused M203. The change from the A3 to the A4 variant was most likely done to increase weapon diversity.
  • The «F90» imprint on the stock of the weapon is an inventory identification number.
  • The bolt catch doesn’t lock back when the weapon is empty, much like the M4A1 and Mk 18. This is strange, considering that there are other weapons that have empty sequences.

Insurgency: Sandstorm

  • The selector switch and auto sear pin aren’t visible on the right side of the M16A4 model, but are visible on the left side; the M16A2 does not have this modeling error.
  • The M16A2’s rear sight is permanently fixed to the long-range setting.

Tips

  • Switch to semi-firing mode to conserve ammunition when engaging normal zombies.
    • Semi-firing mode is more accurate than burst and, in the long run, saves you more ammo.
    • If you have a quick trigger finger, crouch and ADS for the best results.
    • Press «V» to change firing modes.
  • Engaging a Brute with this weapon at medium to far range is encouraged due to its high DPS, and a surprising amount of accuracy, allowing a great number of headshots dealing double damage.
  • It’s highly recommended to equip the Bulldozer I when using this weapon, as in heated situations you’ll burn through ammunition quickly. The extra mags could very well save you.
  • It is recommended for the user to space out their bursting in order to prevent losing accuracy than to spray and pray.
  • Bursting while ADS’ing requires vertical compensation.
  • It is best to use burst mode on a big horde of zombies, as you can wipe out most of the zombies if you have the ammo.
  • Take advantage of the M16A1’s

In Team Deathmatch, a well-aimed burst will quickly dispatch your opponents.

burst and high damage to quickly dispatch foes whenever jumping out of cover.

  • It is recommended to buy the Barrel Mag as soon as possible due to the fact there are no drawbacks to it.
  • You can combine this gun with the M93R, quickly switching between the two weapons to quickly bring down a Brute

However, you may run out of ammo doing so.

Trivia

  • The earlier version of this weapon didn’t include the red dot sight. Instead, it was the iron sight with no zoom function. Later on, it was replaced.
  • CrossFire Indonesia once offered this weapon for 30 days as a reward for reporting a hacker and or hacking program to the publisher.
  • When zoomed in, it should be noted that the bullets actually go a bit above the actual red dot.
  • This scope is actually an ACOG 4x. However it is red dot instead.
  • In real life, the M16A3 is just an assault rifle variant of the original M16 rifle, not a Light Machine Gun. It features fully-automatic firing mode like the A1 model.
